Your Career Control System

Career Headway's Your Career Control System is written in an easy-to-follow, explanatory style, to guide you through what you need to do if you are to get that new job and take control of your career. It is highly relevant, irrespective of what level of seniority you might have previously reached (if any at all).

It is presented in three phases:

Phase One covers Product Knowledge. Any salesman will tell you that you cannot sell anything without a thorough knowledge of the product - and you do not know yourself as well as you might think. You know what you have achieved in the past. But employers do not employ you for your past glories - only for your future potential in their organisation.

Phase One of Your Career Control System covers:

  • the overall strategy for your campaign,

  • a personal information database,

  • identifying what you are really selling,

  • providing supporting evidence to back up your claims, and

  • identifying the type of work you actually enjoy doing!

Phase Two of Your Career Control System covers the creation of your 'toolkit' - to equip you, ready for your task:

  • how to create the right first impression,

  • in-depth sections on creating your CV or résumé,

  • a profile to use with Recruitment Consultants,

  • written and spoken presentations,

  • an 'audition piece' for use in interviews,

  • telephone techniques, etc.

Because this is such a crucial phase, it is supplemented with numerous examples of real (anonymous) CVs and presentations to enable you to easily understand and learn how to prepare your own effective material.

Phase Three of Your Career Control System - in itself over 250 pages - covers the strategy of how to approach the Job Market. It aims to stop you from being merely active in the Job Market and to change you into becoming effective in the Job Market.

It will give you skill and knowledge in:

  • how the Job Market works,

  • personal marketing techniques,

  • the so-called Unadvertised Job Market - what it really is (and what it isn't!) and how to access the (approximately) 80% of jobs that change hands in it,

  • the Advertised Market - how to identify which adverts to respond to and, crucially, how to make your application stand out as being different or special,

  • the world of the Recruitment Consultant,

  • speculative approaches to employers,

  • job meetings / interviews,

  • handling difficult or awkward questions,

  • negotiating terms,

  • evaluating job offers and contracts, and

  • ensuring that this is a career step and not just a change of job, by guiding on your future career development.

It also looks at:

  • considering self-employment,

  • alternatives to full-time paid employment, and

  • working abroad.

As with the previous phases, Phase Three is fully supported with many specimens and examples, to enable you to plan and carry out your own effective Job Search Campaign.

Remember, Your Career Control System is written to enable you to answer for yourself those three questions we identified earlier:

  • What have I got to offer?

  • Where am I going?

      and

  • How do I get there?

And, by following it, you will then know how to become effective in managing your career, both now and for the future.
